Original Canon
Canon Point: Immediately after the Day of Black Sun, before meeting up with the Gaang.
Background Link: Seriously everything you could want re: Zuko's backstory.
Personality: Zuko has several conflicting personality traits, but one that stands out is his pride. He started off stubborn, easily angered, and ridiculously determined, and... well, none of that has actually changed; he's just learned to channel it in a more positive way. Despite being convinced that he's lost his honor, he actually has very strong morals when he's not hidden in his Blue Spirit persona, which he's abandoned by the canonpoint I'm using.
Being raised as royalty, Zuko is quite good with strategy, planning, and leading(he becomes the Team Dad pretty much immediately after the Gaang accepts him), but when it comes to personal, normal interactions he finds himself floundering. He wore a mask of normalcy in Ba Sing Se, but a mask was all it was; when compared to "normal" teens he really has a difficult time fitting in. This will likely color his interactions with other characters in Animus.
As a sidenote and related to the above, Zuko has a very narrow sense of humor; jokes are often lost on him, and when he tries to make his own it usually backfires horribly. While that's not specifically what bothers him, it sets him back in his desire to be accepted as who he is rather than someone else's ideal and it's frustrating in a way he can't quite understand.
Among his family he is the least powerful firebender, something that causes quite a lot of stress for him; it does, however, mean he outstrips most of the other firebenders in his country. His style, while absolutely incorporating his own flair, is practically rote; much of his training revolved around basic stances, attacks, and tactics, and it's shown more than once that this thorough knowledge of beginner firebending is a great asset against opponents who just had to "get through it" in order to gain more power; this is very likely due to Iroh's influence, as he seems to understand his native element better than any other firebender we see up until "The Firebending Masters." Of course, in the beginning Zuko was all about raw power, but as the show progressed he learned precision and self-control to a much greater degree, reflecting his transformation from a desperate and troubled teenager into a young man who can (usually) stand on his own. He still has a problem with hesitating and not being able to distinguish the right vs wrong thing to do when a situation comes down to the wire, but he's getting better. Honest.
It's unlikely that he'll ever truly "get over" his troubled and rather abrasive nature, but he's slowly gaining mastery over it and learning to not let his ideas about "destiny" and his unfortunate family situation control him so much.
Abilities: Zuko is a firebender, which really is just a fancy way of saying he's pyrokinetic. His abilities are specifically a martial art; when he's immobile his options are limited but not totally eradicated. He was taught a few unusual tricks by his uncle, specifically how to use his breath to keep himself warm with a more subtle form of firebending based on breath control rather than force and emotion, as well as the ability to "catch" and redirect lightning. He's only had to do it once and it's a dangerous technique, but it's also based on a bending style that isn't his own, so it's practically unheard of outside of him and his uncle. It's possible that if he's put in situations that don't respond well to his usual methods he might start to get more creative.
On that note, Zuko has been in physical training through most of his life. He's physically strong and more than capable of dealing out damage barehanded and without his bending. He can be stealthy and crafty in situations that call for it, especially during his adventures as the nonbending Blue Spirit and his infiltration of the north pole. His intensive training with breath control means he can stay underwater for a very long time, and his ability to generate his own heat means he's much less susceptible to cold. It's unspecified exactly where he picked up his ability to dual-wield swords(they're called broadswords in the show but Dao is the more correct word for the ones he uses) but they both augment his skills and can stand on their own when they need to. In this way, he has several means of offense, though defense is something he tends to lack. That's what Earthbenders are for. He can take one hell of a beating but he'd rather strike quickly and definitively than draw out a fight.
